Unforgettable journey from Chamba to New Tehri

Before the creation of Tehri Dam, Old Tehri village was located at the foot of surrounding mountains, but after the commissioning of Tehri Dam, the entire village was shifted to the summit of these mountains, and was named New Tehri. On our way to the dam, we had to pass through Chamba, one of the attractions of New Tehri that gets plenty of visitors every year.

We took a halt at Chamba during our trip to New Tehri. It is a fascinating Himalayan town, which preserves its good old charm. When we started from Chamba, and moved towards New Tehri, we were amazed by the beauty of its mountain slopes and lush greenery that covered the entire region. We passed through old Tehri en route to New Tehri, and found that it was covered with water from Tehri Dam. From this juncture, a road led to New Tehri, beautifully moving upwards with sharp turns. When we reached New Tehri, it was already dark and we were unable to witness its natural beauty.

The very next day, we came out of our hotel and were awestruck at the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and a huge dam tucked between them. Our short trip to New Tehri was made memorable with these majestic views.

Sem Mukhem is an adventurous trekking point in New Tehri

New Tehri town emerged when the old township of Tehri was covered by water from the Tehri Dam, and there was an urgent need to rehabilitate the affected people. It is a planned township located in the Tehri Garhwal District of Uttarakhand. Its strategic location on the mountains has played an important role in its popularity among tourists, who enjoy the panoramic views that it offers.

Importance of Tehri also lies in the fact that it is a central point from where one can embark on excursions to the nearby tourist locations. Treks are also conducted in the this region, which gives adventure lovers the chance to enjoy marvellous views of Garhwal Mountains and have a glimpse of the life in the villages nestled along the mountain slopes. Among the many treks that are conducted from Tehri, the Sem Mukhem trek is greatly popular among locals as well as tourists, owing to the Nag Raja temple located in this area. This temple has a lot of importance in the lives of the locals.

Trekkers have to reach Khamba Khal, from where, the actual trek begins. One can take some rest in the middle of these treks at Sem Mukhem, and experience Himalayan hospitality in this beautiful village. A stay in Tehri can be enjoyed in any of the popular hotels or resorts located in this region, which have all the modern facilities in them.
